How to install micro ring extensions

Micro ring extensions are a gentle method where you attach small strands of hair to your own hair with micro rings. Below we show you how, step by step.

Step-by-step guide

Installing micro ring extensions

1. Gather everything you need

When installing micro ring extensions at home, it's important to have the right tools – otherwise you won't get far.

To install micro ring extensions, you'll need:

2. Wash, dry and straighten your hair

Before you start the installation, it's important that your hair is completely clean – it helps the micro rings grip better.

When washing your hair, make sure you don't get conditioner or hair mask on your scalp, as the micro rings can slide in smooth hair.

Once you've washed your hair, you should dry and straighten it. That makes the installation much easier for you, because your hair is more manageable.

3. Make a horizontal section in your own hair

Use your tail comb to make a horizontal section from ear to ear, roughly 3-5 centimetres from your hairline at the nape.

Put the rest of your hair up with a hair clip, so it doesn't get in the way when you attach the micro rings.

💡Divide your hair extensions into piles before you start, so you're sure they're evenly distributed in your hair. Expect roughly 60 strands for the back of your head and 20 for each side – that's 100 strands in total.

4. Attach a micro ring to your own hair

Now it's time to attach your extension strands with micro rings.

Start the installation roughly 3-4 centimetres from the hairline at your face.

Place a row of micro rings on the loop for micro rings, and pull a strand of your own hair through the loop of the needle. The strand should be roughly the same size as the strand of hair extensions you're attaching.

Pull the micro ring over your own hair, so your hair is inside the ring.

5. Insert an extension strand into the micro ring

While holding the micro ring close to your scalp (roughly half a centimetre from your scalp), take one of your micro ring strands and insert it into the micro ring.

Use the pliers to squeeze the micro ring flat. Give the ring a couple of extra squeezes at the sides to make sure it closes completely. It should lie flat against your scalp – otherwise it's too tight.

6. Repeat through the rest of your section

Now repeat the installation through the rest of your section, until you're 3-4 centimetres from the hairline at your face. Keep that area completely free of extensions - it makes things both easier and prettier when you put your hair up later.

7. Make a new section and repeat the process

Now continue the same way, making sections and attaching your strands.

Your next section should be 1-2 centimetres above the previous one, depending on how thick your hair is – and whether you want volume only, or volume and length. The more volume and length you want, the more hair you need to install.

8. The higher up the head, the longer the sections

The higher up your head you get, the longer your sections need to be – once you get above your ears, you need to move closer to your face. But remember to still leave 3-4 centimetres free at the hairline.

The further up your head you get, the more often you should check how it looks. Take your hair completely out of the clip a couple of times and check whether your own hair still easily covers the micro rings.

Step-by-step guide

How to take your micro ring extensions out

Once your hair has grown a couple of centimetres, your micro ring extensions need to come out. Both to avoid unnecessary damage to your own hair and to make sure the micro rings can't be seen.

If you want to put them back in, you just need new micro rings and extensions pliers.

1. Put your hair up and squeeze the micro rings

Put your own hair up with a hair clip, so you can easily reach the row of micro rings.

Use your extensions pliers to squeeze the micro rings from the opposite angle, so they open up.

2. Gently pull the micro rings out of your hair

Once you've opened the micro ring, you can gently pull both the micro ring and the micro ring extension strand out of your own hair.

After taking all your micro ring extensions out, brush your hair with a tail comb to remove any loose hairs and tangles.

Don't be alarmed if it feels like you're losing a lot of hair. We naturally shed around 100 hairs a day, and that hair has been sitting in the micro rings. So there's no need to panic.

Incredibly skilled and service-minded staff with customer satisfaction at the centre of it all! I was trying extensions with the braid method for the first time, and was recommended wefts in Original quality. It is considerably cheaper than the Luxury hair, but for them it was not about their earnings. It was about making sure that I, as a first-time user of the braid method, would not end up regretting spending money on an expensive product if extensions turned out not to be for me.
