Installing and removing classic wefts with the Micro weft method

Classic wefts can be adapted to (almost) everyone, and the result is both discreet and natural. Classic wefts can be installed in several different ways – below we walk through our own favourite: the Micro weft method, which combines the best of the easy weft and braid methods.

Step-by-step guide

Installing classic wefts (Micro weft method)

1. Find what you need

When installing your classic wefts, you'll need exactly the right equipment. It doesn't just make the installation easier – it's actually indispensable.

For installation with the Micro weft method, you'll need:

2. Wash, dry and straighten your own hair

Wash your hair thoroughly with a good shampoo – you can use conditioner, but if you have very fine or smooth hair, it might be a good idea to skip it this time.

Dry, brush and straighten your hair – it makes the whole process easier for you

3. Divide your hair into two sections

Start by making one horizontal parting from ear to ear in your own hair with the tail comb.

As a rule, your first section should start roughly 5 centimetres above the hairline at your nape.

Put your own hair up with a large hair clip, so it doesn't get in the way during installation.

4. Now it's time for the micro rings

Here's how:

  • Start roughly 3-4 centimetres away from the hairline at your face (so the micro rings can't be seen when you put your hair up).
  • Load a few micro rings onto your loop for micro rings, so it's ready when you need it.
  • Use the tail comb to pick up a small strand of your own hair, sized to fit the hole in the micro ring.
  • Pull your own strand of hair through the loop for micro rings, and pull the micro ring over your own hair until it sits close to your scalp (as close as you can without it feeling tight or uncomfortable). Squeeze the micro ring flat with your extensions pliers.
  • Pick up a new strand of your own hair next to the micro ring you just squeezed onto your own hair.
  • Take half of the hair from the first strand and join it with the one you just picked up. Squeeze a micro ring around the joined strand.
  • Continue making strands with half of the hair from your previous strand and half from a new one, until you reach the middle of the back of your head.
  • Start from the opposite side and continue until you reach the middle again.
  • Join the two strands from each side with a micro ring.

💡Picture yourself making a track along your parting that looks like a waterfall – that's why we call the method micro weft with waterfall.

5. Make a plan before sewing your classic weft on

You cut your classic weft to size yourself, so it's a good idea to plan how much hair you'll need where – that way you avoid running out of hair before you've finished the installation.

Depending on how thick your hair is, expect roughly:

  • 2-3 wefts at the nape
  • 1-2 wefts that go all the way up the side of your head

That's around 5 wefts in total, which corresponds to roughly 100 grams of hair.

💡 Because a full installation only takes 2-3 micro weft tracks, it's a good idea to double up your classic wefts. That way you get more volume on each track.

6. Now it's time to sew

Once you've made a full track of micro rings and cut your classic weft to size if needed, it's time to sew it on.

Now thread your curved needle and fasten it next to the first micro ring.

You can do it like this:
Thread your needle double and guide the needle in behind the hair between the first two micro rings. Make several stitches on top of each other - ideally 5-10. That fastens the thread so it won't come undone.

How you fasten your thread is a matter of taste – there are several ways to do it. The most important thing is simply that your fastening holds.

7. How to sew your classic weft on

When sewing your classic weft, make simple stitches through the classic weft and your own hair held between the micro rings. In other words, sew through the hair between the micro rings, not through the micro rings themselves.

Once you've sewn all the way along, fasten the thread well. Do that by making many "stitches" on top of each other – we recommend at least 5-10 stitches, so you're sure the thread won't come loose.

8. Make a new section roughly 3-4 centimetres above and repeat the process

Now you simply repeat what you've already done once.

Use your tail comb to make a new section roughly 3-4 centimetres above the one you just made, and squeeze the micro rings on the same way as before. For most people, just two tracks are perfect for a full installation.

💡The higher up your head you get, the wider your weft needs to be, as your classic weft should go all the way out to the sides. Just remember to leave 3-4 centimetres between the classic weft and your hairline.

9. Check whether your own hair covers the top weft

It's a good idea to keep checking whether your hair covers the top weft of hair and still looks natural – it's important not to place the top weft too high up.

How to take your classic wefts out

Once your hair has grown a couple of centimetres, it's time to take your classic wefts out.

  1. Start by cutting the sewing thread open – use small scissors and be careful when cutting (so you don't cut into your own hair or your extensions)
  2. Use your extensions pliers to squeeze the micro rings from the opposite angle – they'll loosen, and you can gently pull them out of your hair.
  3. Brush your hair with the tail comb after taking all the micro rings out.

💡 Don't worry if it feels like you're shedding a lot – we shed around 100 hairs a day, and since they've been held in the micro rings for a couple of months, it's completely natural to shed when you take them out.
