Installing and removing classic wefts with the braid method

Classic wefts are a flexible extension solution that suits most hair types and delivers a natural, discreet result. There are several installation methods – below we walk through the braid method: a classic, gentle technique where the hair is braided close along the scalp and the wefts are sewn on for a durable result.

Step-by-step guide

Installing classic wefts (braid method)

1. Find what you need

When installing extensions with the braid method, you'll need exactly the right equipment. It doesn't just make the installation easier – it's actually indispensable.

For installation with the braid method, you'll need:

2. Wash, dry and straighten your own hair

Wash your hair thoroughly with a good shampoo – you can use conditioner, but if you have very fine or smooth hair, it might be a good idea to skip it this time.

Dry, brush and straighten your hair – it makes the whole process easier for you

3. Divide your hair into two sections

Start by making one horizontal parting from ear to ear in your own hair with the tail comb.

As a rule, your first section should start roughly 5 centimetres above the hairline at your nape.

Put your own hair up with a large hair clip, so it doesn't get in the way during installation.

4. Now it's time to braid

Start roughly 3-4 centimetres away from the hairline at your face (so the braid can't be seen when you put your hair up).

Take a small strand of hair, divide it into three and braid a few times. Then add a new strand of hair each time you braid.

💡 Picture a small horizontal French braid.

Continue this way until you reach roughly the middle of the back of your head, and finish the braid with a micro ring, placed and squeezed flat close to the scalp.

5. Repeat the process from the opposite side and secure the braid

Start a braid from the opposite side and continue until you meet the first braid.

Finish the braid with a micro ring, placed and squeezed flat close to the scalp.

To secure the two braids, take roughly half of the two strands from each side and join them with another micro ring.

💡Once you've finished this step, the result should look like the picture.

6. Make a plan before sewing your classic weft on

You cut your classic weft to size yourself, so it's a good idea to plan how much hair you'll need where – that way you avoid running out of hair before you've finished the installation.

Depending on how thick your hair is, expect roughly:

  • 2-3 wefts at the nape
  • 1-2 wefts that go all the way up the side of your head

That's around 5 wefts in total, which corresponds to roughly 100 grams of hair.

💡 Because a full installation only takes 2-3 braid tracks, it's a good idea to double up your classic wefts. That way you get more volume on each track.

7. Now it's time to sew

Once you've made a full braid track and cut your classic weft to size if needed, it's time to sew it on.

Now thread your curved needle and fasten it at one end of the braid.

You can do it like this:
Thread your needle double and guide the needle in behind the hair and through the braid. Make several stitches on top of each other - ideally 5-10. That fastens the thread so it won't come undone.

How you fasten your thread is a matter of taste – there are several ways to do it. The most important thing is simply that your fastening holds.

8. How to sew your classic weft on

When sewing your classic weft, make simple stitches through the classic weft and the braid.

Once you've sewn all the way along, fasten the thread well. Do that by making many "stitches" on top of each other – we recommend at least 5-10 stitches, so you're sure the thread won't come loose.

9. Make a new section roughly 3-4 centimetres above and repeat the process

Now you simply repeat what you've already done once.

Use your tail comb to make a new section roughly 3-4 centimetres above the one you just made, and make a new braid the same way as before. For most people, just two tracks are perfect for a full installation.

💡The higher up your head you get, the wider your weft needs to be, as your classic weft should go all the way out to the sides. Just remember to leave 3-4 centimetres between the classic weft and your hairline.

10. Check whether your own hair covers the top weft

It's a good idea to keep checking whether your hair covers the top weft of hair and still looks natural – it's important not to place the top weft too high up.

Step-by-step guide

Removing classic wefts (braid method)

1. Start by cutting the sewing thread open

Once your hair has grown a couple of centimetres, it's time to take your classic wefts out.

Start by cutting the sewing thread open – use small scissors and be careful when cutting (so you don't cut into your own hair or your extensions)

2. Squeeze the micro rings from the opposite angle

Use your extensions pliers to squeeze the micro rings from the opposite angle – they'll loosen, and you can gently pull them out of your hair.

3. Brush your hair

Brush your hair with the tail comb after taking all the micro rings out.

💡 Don't worry if it feels like you're shedding a lot – we shed around 100 hairs a day, and since they've been held in the micro rings for a couple of months, it's completely natural to shed when you take them out.
