How to install keratin extensions

Keratin extensions are a gentle method that delivers a natural, discreet result – and the method is brilliant for you if you often wear your hair up. We show you step by step how to install them at home.

Step-by-step guide

Installing keratin extensions

1. Wash, dry and straighten your own hair

Is your hair freshly washed? Perfect! If not, start by washing your hair well – and make sure not to get conditioner or hair mask on your scalp. Otherwise you risk your keratin extensions sliding out.

Once you've washed your hair, it needs to be completely dry before you start – and we recommend straightening it. That makes your hair much easier to work with.

2. Gather your equipment

When installing keratin extensions, it's absolutely essential that you have all the equipment you need, and that you team up with a good friend who can help you

To install keratin extensions, you'll need:

3. Divide your strands before you start

Before you start attaching your keratin extensions, it's a good idea to divide them into three piles. That way you're sure of an even distribution – and that you won't run out of strands along the way.

💡You'll need 60% of your strands for the back of your head and 20% for each side. If you have 100 strands, for example, that's 60 strands for the back and 20 for each side.

4. Make a horizontal section in your own hair

Start by making a horizontal parting in your hair roughly 5 centimetres above the hairline at your nape. It's important that your section is completely straight. Better to redo it a few times until it's spot on. Always start from the bottom when installing extensions.

Put your own hair up with a hair clip, so it doesn't get in the way.

5. Take a strand of your own hair matching the extension strand

Start by picking up a small strand of your own hair – it should be roughly the same size as your keratin strand.

Place your heat shield around the strand – and secure it with a small hair clip. The heat shield protects your scalp and makes sure no loose hairs go astray.

6. Place a keratin extension strand on top of your own hair

Take a keratin strand and place it together with your own hair, so the keratin sits around your own strand of hair – roughly 1 centimetre from the scalp.

At the top of each keratin extension strand sits a small piece of keratin – you now need to melt it and roll it around your own hair.

When your heat iron is ready, place the heat plates around the keratin. Make sure all the keratin is melted by distributing the heat evenly. You can move the heat iron around a little as you go.

7. Roll the keratin around the hair

Once the keratin is melted, gently roll it around the extensions and your own hair with your index finger and thumb, so the strand sets firmly.

Make sure the keratin goes all the way around, so your own hair is enclosed in a keratin tube.

8. Repeat through your entire section

Now continue attaching strands through the rest of your section – but make sure to keep 3-4 centimetres free of extensions from the hairline at your face. That way you know your hair will look natural when you put it up, for example.

9. Make a new section 1-2 centimetres higher up

Now you repeat the whole thing. Simply make a new horizontal section 1-2 centimetres above the one you just made and do the same again.

The further up your head you get, the longer your sections become. Make sure to check regularly how it looks with all your hair down. It's important that you still have enough hair left to cover the keratin.

💡 It's important that your last section of keratin extensions is below the crown we all have on top of our heads.

Step-by-step guide

Removing keratin extensions

You can absolutely take your keratin extensions out yourself – but we recommend extra patience and some tasty snacks (for the blood sugar, you know).

1. Gently squeeze each strand

Use flat pliers (extensions pliers) to gently squeeze each strand to loosen the keratin.

2. Apply keratin remover

Once you've given each strand a squeeze, apply our liquid keratin remover to each strand. Let the keratin remover work for 5-10 seconds.

3. Loosen the keratin and gently pull your extension strand

Squeeze again with the extensions pliers until the keratin is completely loosened.

Loosen the keratin and gently pull your extension strand out of your own hair. If a strand is being stubborn, you can always try a little more remover liquid and try again.

4. Repeat until all strands are out

Repeat the process one row at a time, until all your strands are out.

Brush your hair with a comb and wash the remover liquid out of your hair.

Don't be alarmed if it feels like you're losing more hair than usual. Shedding is completely natural. And when you take your keratin extensions out, you're shedding almost two months' worth at once. So more loose hairs than you're used to is completely normal.
