How to install tape extensions

With tape extensions, you transform your hair one weft at a time. The method is semi-permanent and suits all hair types and thicknesses – including you if you have thin or fine hair. See how to install your tape extensions here.

Step-by-step guide

Installing tape extensions

1. Find what you need

Before you start the installation, it's a good idea to gather everything you'll need.

To install tape extensions, you'll need:

2. Make sure your hair is freshly washed

The first thing to do before starting the installation is to make sure your own hair is completely clean.

So wash it with a clarifying shampoo that removes all oil and dirt from the hair. After that, do not use conditioner, hair mask, oils or other softening products on your scalp, as they make your hair slippery and your tape extensions risk sliding out.

Finish by blow-drying your hair - completely dry.

3. Divide your hair into sections

Start by making a horizontal parting in your own hair roughly 3-5 centimetres from the hairline at your nape. Always start from the bottom – it makes it easier to adjust as you go and keep track of both your own hair and your extensions.

Put your own hair away with a large hair clip, so it doesn't get in the way.

💡Tip: When installing your tape extensions, it's a good idea to make sure they're not directly below (or above) each other. Place your tape extensions staggered in layers – a bit like bricks on a house.

4. Make a plan for your first section

Start by assessing how many tape wefts fit into your section. There should be roughly 2 centimetres free on each side of the hairline.

Then pick up a thin section of your own hair with the tail comb. The section should be the same width as the piece of tape. The section of your own hair should be neither too thin nor too thick. And it's important that it's completely straight, as a crooked section can tug at and wear on your own hair.

5. Attach your first tape extensions

Take your first tape weft with the sticky side facing up and place it close to the scalp below the section you've just made. Make sure it's not too close, as it can strain and tug at the hair.

Lay your own hair down over the tape – without touching the tape with your fingers. Use your tail comb instead to press the hair onto the tape.

Then place a new tape weft on top with the tape facing down, creating a kind of "tape sandwich".

Make sure they match precisely, then press the tape wefts firmly together, so you're sure there are no air pockets between the two sections (you're welcome to use your fingers here)

6. Repeat across the entire back of your head

Now repeat the sectioning and installation through the entire section – when it's time for the next section, leave roughly 2 centimetres above your last tape section.

Check as you go that your own hair still falls naturally down over the wefts, so you're sure they can't be seen. It's always a good idea to do this regularly – especially as you approach the top of your head.

💡Tip: Divide your tape extensions up in advance. You'll need roughly 50 grams for the nape and 25 grams for each side of your head.

7. Attach tape extensions at an angle on the sides of your head

Once you've finished installing your tape extensions at the nape, it's time to start on the sides.

Section and attach them in exactly the same way – here it's just important to make sections that slope slightly upwards towards your face. It looks more natural, and it's easier to put your hair up.

Make your sections so the front corner towards your face slopes slightly upwards – it comes almost naturally once you're standing there.

8. Enjoy your long, gorgeous hair for the next couple of months

Once you've installed tape extensions on both sides, you're done – and you can enjoy your extra long or full hair for the next couple of months, before it's time to take them out again.

Whether you have your extensions trimmed or not is up to you – but we always recommend a light trim. It makes the result much more natural.

When it's time to take your tape extensions out again, you can always remove the tape, apply new tape and use them again.

Step-by-step guide

Removing tape extensions

Once your hair has grown a couple of centimetres, it's time to take them out – but don't worry, you can absolutely use them again. Just apply new tape, and they're ready for another round.

Here's what to do when your tape extensions need to come out.

1. Pour tape remover liquid in between the tape joins

Start by pouring a little tape remover liquid in between the pieces of tape, until you can feel them starting to loosen from each other.

Use your tail comb to gently create space between the wefts, and work liquid in between them until you can pull the two pieces apart – without tugging at your own hair.

2. Comb tape residue out of your hair with a tail comb

Use a tail comb to comb through your own hair, so you get any tape residue out of your hair.

Is the tape being stubborn in your own hair? You can use a little more tape remover liquid to get the last of it out.

3. Wash your hair thoroughly

Once you've taken all your tape extensions out of your hair, it's time to wash it – thoroughly.

Massage your scalp with the shampoo and rinse – we recommend washing your hair a couple of times, so you're sure your hair is completely clean and fresh afterwards.

Finish with a hair mask and conditioner, and your hair is as good as new again.
