GUIDE

Washing and caring for semi-permanent extensions

Do you wear classic wefts, tape extensions, keratin or micro ring extensions? With any of our semi-permanent extension methods, you wash them while they're installed in your own hair. Follow our guide for healthy, beautiful hair.

1. Brush your hair with an extensions brush
Before showering, gently comb your hair with an extensions brush. It's gentler than a normal brush, as it doesn't tug at the hair. Start by brushing the ends of your hair and work your way up.

2. Wet your hair and apply shampoo
Wet all of your hair and massage our recommended shampoo well into your scalp, then distribute it through the lengths. Be a little extra careful where your extensions are installed - you'll get the hang of it quickly.

Rinse thoroughly and wash with shampoo again, so you're sure the hair is completely clean.

3. Give your hair a little extra love with a hair mask
Both your own hair and your extensions need moisture and care. That's why we recommend using a hair mask every other time you wash your hair.

A good hair mask opens up the strands' cuticle layer, letting the moisture penetrate deeply and really work. Distribute the hair mask through the lengths of the hair (avoid the scalp, as your extensions risk loosening).

Let it work for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it out.

4. Put the finishing touch on with conditioner
Always finish your washing routine with conditioner – even when you're not using a hair mask. A good conditioner seals the cuticle layers of your hair, leaving it softer and more manageable. Distribute the conditioner in the lengths only and let it work for 1-2 minutes before rinsing it out.

5. Squeeze the water out of your hair and brush again
Gently squeeze the water out of your hair and finish by brushing it again. Start at the ends and work your way up.

This is also a good time to give the lengths a little extra love with a moisturising hair oil.

6. Now the hair needs to dry
Whether you let your hair air dry or use a blow dryer to cut down the drying time is up to you. If you use a blow dryer, don't skip the heat protection – and remember to blow-dry from the top down to avoid frizz.

7. Straighten or curl your hair with heat
Once your hair is dry, we recommend styling it – ideally with a straightener every now and then. The heat from the straightener smooths down the cuticle layers, leaving your hair soft, shiny and gorgeous. Avoid the areas where your extensions are attached.

And we'd rather say it once too often than once too little: Remember the heat protection.

How often should you wash your extensions?

You probably already know that washing your own hair too often isn't good for it, right? It's exactly the same with your extensions.

Depending on how often you wear your hair extensions, we recommend washing them 1-2 times a week.

But that's only a guideline – if you often train with your extensions in, your hair may need washing more often.

You can train your hair to need fewer washes
Many of us wash our hair far too often. But you can absolutely train your hair to stay fresh with fewer washes.

You do that by gradually adding more days between washes. At first, your hair might be a little extra greasy – but that's just your scalp needing time to adjust. Your hair gets greasy because the scalp overcompensates for the frequent washing. Before long, your scalp will start producing fewer oils.

If you're in a pinch, you can always freshen up your hair with a little dry shampoo between washes.
